Iran releases Slovakian accused of being CIA spy
The Iranian authorities released Matej Valuch, apprehended in Iran in mid January on suspicion of being a CIA spy, Slovakian internet dialy, The Daily.sk, wrote February 15.
“Slovak Matej Valuch detained in Iran in January over spying suspicion was released and is at home in Slovakia, Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak told journalists today,” according to The Daily.sk.
The Foreign Minister did not give details of the negotiations held between the two governments, although he did say that no money had changed hands.
Valuch was accused of passing information to the CIA on Iran’s “scientific progress,” according to the Slovakian daily. He appeared on Iranian television saying that after coming to work in Iran he had been approached by a CIA agent. The testimony has been deemed as unreliable.
Valuch returned to Slovakia after negotiations, which the Foreign Minister called “difficult and complicated.” He has refused to speak publicly about his ordeal.
