Czech police makes arrests in USD 60 mln tax evasion scam
The Czech police discovered a fuel import tax scam worth CZK 1.25 bln, on imports from Germany and Austria, according to Czech news website Ceskie Noviny.
“Czech police [...] charged eight people with tax evasion in import of fuel from Germany and Austria, causing the damage of about 1.25 bn crowns, one of the biggest cases in the Czech Republic,” Ceskie Noviny wrote.
The assailants imported tones of both diesel and petrol in the last two years, through companies which failed to pay VAT. The fuel was then sold to customers with the VAT included.
Detectives say that the case is one of the largest of its kind in the country’s history with some 100 officers being involved in raids that seized cash, luxury cars and closed bank accounts.
The police operation involved both doemstic and foreign authorities, Ceskie Noviny wrote.
