Former mayor of Nis detained over abuse of office
On May 27 Police in the Serbian city of Nis arrested Milos S., a former mayor of the city and former official of Serbia’s Democratic party (DS), as part of a corruption investigation that also resulted in a detention of Vladimir S., a former deputy public attorney, the Serbian newswire Tanjug reported May 27.
“The criminal police in the southern Serbian city of Nis on Tuesday (May 27) morning arrested and ordered a 48-hour detention for Milos S. (born in 1973), a former mayor of Nis and Vladimir S. (born in 1960), a former deputy public attorney of Nis, on suspicion of criminal abuse of office,” the Serbian Interior Ministry said in a press release, as cited by the newswire.
Milos S. is suspected of criminal abuse of office in connection with the signing in December 2011 of a 15-year contract with the private cinema enterprise Vilin Grad without the consent of the Republic Directorate for Property. Vladimir S. at the time allegedly signed an opinion stating that the contract with Vilin Grad met all legal requirements.
“In this way the suspects caused losses of more than RDS 90 mln to the city of Nis,” the Interior Ministry said in the press release, as cited by Serbian news agency B92.
Once the 48-hour detention ends, the suspects will be taken to a competent prosecutor’s office for questioning.
