Bulgarian chief prosecutor probes top liberal politician accused of corruption
Bulgarian Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov launched an investigation into financial and tax fraud allegedly committed by the former parliament deputy speaker and deputy chief of the Turkish ethnic minority party, the PDS, Histro B., the local media reported on Nov. 7.
“The Sofia city prosecutor’s office has initiated a probe over alleged financial and tax crimes and against Histro B., former vice-speaker of the Bulgarian parliament” Sofia news agency novinite.com reported.
Histro B. recently resigned from office citing personal reasons.
The prosecutor’s office is working together with the state national security agency to determine whether the allegations against Histro B. are founded.
The scandal comes at a difficult time for the government, which continues to be plagued by mass protests by citizens who believe that the system is inherently corrupt and that the government should resign.
Students from Sofia University joined the protest in late October. Some 100 individuals are believed to be occupying the university. The occupation prompted students from other educational institutions around the country to follow suit.
