Romanian parliament approves dismissal of President Traian Basescu
Romanian Parliament adopted a declaration calling for the resignation of President Traian Basescu in connection with a corruption scandal involving his brother Mircea Basescu, the Ukrainian daily media TSN wrote, June 26.
“Romanian President Traian Basescu knew about questionable ties of his brother that could lead to criminal consequences, however he did not intervene in the situation, which is incompatible with the position of the president,” according to the announcement. “In this context, the Romanian Senate requires the President’s resignation.”
Mircea Basescu was accused of accepting a bribe of EUR 250,000 for assisting the release from prison of one of the country’s criminal authorities, the media wrote.
The President’s resignation was supported by 344 deputies.
